"Competing commitments- this is when one of or conscious goals bumps into one of our unconscious beliefs and it is quietly but brutally clobbered by it."-Robert Kegan
I believe that underneath us all is a very complex machine. It records evening it hears, sees, tastes, etc. Our minds are perfect recorders.
Once this data comes in, the three layers of the brain process the data. Some of the information is new and must be either accepted or rejected. This is where the quote above comes into play.
Over time we form our unconscious beliefs. They are the iceberg underneath the sea. We can see the top of the iceberg(conscious ) but underneath might rest more than 80 percent of it(unconscious).
The unfortunate part for us that the unconscious will kill off new information that does not fit with current beliefs. The only way to overcome this is to continuously expose yourself to new data and hope that over time your brain will see the benefit of this new information to start believing it.
Today's question is:
"How do you expose yourself to new data?"
